English – Handwriting
At Penshurst CE Primary School, handwriting is taught in all year groups using the programme ‘Letter-Join’.
Children in Reception are taught the print formation of the letters within their phonic sessions, and in fun, daily handwriting games and activities. This is done with handwriting rhymes embedded in our phonics programme with the Letter Join resources used to model the shapes. The children are also exposed to many opportunities to build their fine motor strength and control within the provision, as well as daily ‘Dough Disco’ throughout the year.
In Key Stage 1 children continue with daily taught handwriting sessions, aiming to secure the print formation of each of the letters and focus on the presentation and lay out on the page. Children in Year 2 will move onto cursive handwriting when they are securely modelling the printed letters in their independent writing.
Our Key Stage 2 pupils continue with cursive handwriting in twice weekly sessions, working on developing their speed, fluency and presentation of handwriting. Targeted intervention is provided quickly, when a child is identified as needing support.
